F.A.S. course
That was in March 1996, just after my 26th birthday. I filled out the forms
in a small bedroom in a youth hostel which had been decorated with murals of yellow
stars and suns - a real astrologer's den and wyrd reminder of what I was doing!
In true wyrd fashion, I came across barriers which tested my commitment: the
realisation that if I did this I would be on my own; my then husband was
very scornful of this subject. Though it was his choice to be so, I had to learn
to let him be that way. There were comments from a variety of people that I
shouldn't set my hopes on something unconventional like this, and shouldn't
go the whole hog right away. But I hadn't given anything up for astrology;
in fact, I gained a much-needed channel for my creativity, as I had been
unable to write for some time at that point. This time, I knew what I wanted
to be when I grew up and was thoroughly excited when I received the course
materials.
By this time, I was also enjoying the newsgroup alt.astrology and, in January,
had struck up a correspondence with Don in California whose own fascination with
astrology helped inspire mine. I also had help from astrologers who knew what
they were doing, and between us found out what my ascendant was: Taurus.
Another building block in the astrological image of who I was.
Committing
It helped to have somebody with whom I could bandy ideas about and who supported
the decision I'd made. Don also put me onto Astrolog, an excellent astrological
program with which I can watch the days alter. My German aunt, Mira, also
supported me and listened as I told her over time of my progress. In the meantime,
I devoured a book called Discover Astrology by Cordelia Mansell, and
then everything astrological by Sasha Fenton, who made the subject seem very real
for me. Too late to turn back by then - I was hooked!
The wyrd brings what you need if your commitment is true, and it brought me
many opportunities beyond the finding of those books at just the right time to
fire my enthusiasm further. When I left my job, with its long commute, to start a
new job with a shorter commute and better hours, I knew I would have more spare
time to study. I received a large number of book tokens as a leaving present and,
with these, I gleefully collected the entire Whitford planets series, all of
which are invaluable reference texts and made me feel more serious about what
I was doing... though not too serious.
Playing
One thing I've noted is that astrology
works better if you don't approach it from a serious, linear, heads-down angle
and instead treat it like playing, allowing the instinctual and intuitive
sides out, untainted by preformed ideas. Allowing delight in bookshopping
and reading to take over is a good way of letting the enthusiasm give you
enough energy to continue.
A large number of major and somewhat difficult events occurred in my life during 1996;
I later discovered that I'd just completed my Saturn transit, a much maligned
event which did in fact help
me to change my whole attitude and worldview and paved a way for me to find a
space for myself. Change must happen and, because in certain aspects of my life
change was not welcome, I found myself with those difficulties. Divorce,
contemplating emigration after a wonderful and
mind-opening trip to California and leaving the new job after it went sour distracted me somewhat
from my studies, but in October I enjoyed the challenge of going to London on my
own for the first time (I dislike the underground intensely, and big cities leave
me feeling uncomfortable) and attended the
Faculty's open day to meet my tutor.
Again, there were some wyrd coincidences - when I had
lunch, the man on my table had an English wife who'd emigrated to America, the woman
had emigrated from New Zealand to be with her English husband, and I was planning on emigrating to
California... Plus, at the end, one of the diploma graduates was Slovene, so I
talked with him and discovered that he knew the town where my Slovene family comes
from, and that I knew his town, Ljubljana. Weaving again... All this letting me know
that I was on the right track.
I spent six weeks over Christmas and New Year in California, before returning in 1997
to wait for the visa application to occur. Since then, I've been studying
sporadically, still distracted by the chaos involved in moving continents and
all manner of strange events happening in my life. I read when I can, and
have much more motivation. I've discovered the astrology mailing lists, and
the ideas are beginning to click together in my head. Some day I'd like to qualify,
but for now I'm just learning by playing. There is a whole community of astrologers
out there on the web and I've had many kind words
and heard much encouragement from them. The game of life and its
reflection in astrology is a good one to play.
And on 15th March 2002, I opened my astrology reports service, Affordable Astrology
Reports. :-)
