Five years of independence

The stamp celebrates the adoption of the Constitutional Charter by Slovenia on 25th June 1991, marking Slovenia's independence from the rest of the beleaguered Yugoslavia. It was the result of a long process of democratisation and also a referendum to ask the people if they wanted such independence. They said, "Yes." One day after the adoption of the Charter, independence was declared.

The celebrations were short-lived because the Yugoslav army then saw fit to attack the new state of Slovenia. Fortunately the war was short, only ten days, and was held off by the Slovene Territorials, the police and the patriotic Slovene people. Near Idrija, where my closest family lives, one enemy tank was captured when it ran out of petrol in the middle of the forest... The drivers were so fed up with being lost that they just gave up.

According to the post office bulletin with information about the stamp for collectors,

"Some believe that favourable political conditions greatly contributed to the swift end of the war, others, of more poetic nature, think that the stars at that time were favourable to Slovenia."

The designer of the 5th anniversary stamp was Miljenko Licul. It features symbols from the Slovene coat of arms - Triglav, the highest peak of Slovenia, and stars in the constellation of Cancer under which Slovenia was born.

Slovenia is a very patriotic country: with its Cancer (mothering) sun in the father-flavour 10th house it parents its people quite effectively. The Slovenes love their country and it tries to do its best for them. The 3rd house moon in Sagittarius indicates links with other countries and, indeed, Slovenia is keen to join the E.C. and communicate elsewhere. One of its larger industries is tourism. Virgo rising indicates a sense of duty; Slovenia does operate a system of national service for young men of 18 and most people I've met there are committed to their country in many different ways. The stellium in 11th house Leo indicates the love and pride once again and a friendly outlook though with the Saturn opposition in Aquarius there is some sense of the country being realistic about its ideals and dreams. The Scorpionic Pluto might perhaps explain how Slovenia was birthed in war, but generally this is a peace loving country with many poets and a deep interest in keeping its own culture alive. Religion-wise, the 9th house is shared between homeloving traditional Taurus and the more quixotic Gemini which explains why, although the main religion is Catholicism and there are hundreds of churches and a strong church culture, many of the younger generation are not particularly following the teachings of the church, but do not abandon it altogether: they adapt it to their needs.

I know there's at least one astrologer in Slovenia because, at the Faculty of Astrological Studies' open day in October 1996, he won one of the awards for the diploma and I helped him with his luggage back to the tube station, swapping Slovene tales!
