Ducks Cross - A Journey in Two Sniglets
Part One - Elusive Ducks

Part 2
Where are the ducks?
On the morning of Monday March 10 1997, the weather didn't
look too good. I hadn't slept very much and spent the morning vegging out
with emails and stuff on the computer, wondering if I would ever wake up.
I did. Ithe afternoon, things and myself were much brighter, and I
determined that
I would go out for a ride. For once, it would not be round my usual
stomping ground. I packed up my saddlebags (chocolate, map, drink,
waterproofs) and set out for Ducks Cross.
This simply involved chugging up the A1 for 25 miles or so, after
filling up in Hitchin. I was perfectly happy, in the sunshine, mellow and
biking. Great feeling. I got to Chawston, where I was supposed to turn off,
and headed off to where Ducks Cross should have been. But it wasn't. I
ended up riding round a large number of country lanes, doing dodgy
u-turns, and getting through Ravensden - before giving up and returning to
the Raven's den!
I saw lots of interesting things: not least, a sign asking for any
witnesses to events around a murder in February, and a lurking police
car. It is hard to imagine that murder would strike such a rural,
pleasant place, but I guess nowhere is exempt. There was barely any traffic
and I enjoyed myself quite thoroughly.
I even saw some ducks, but none of them were cross ;-)
Eventually - knowing that I was way off course - I stopped and checked the
map, and worked my way back. I still thought I'd been in the right place,
but couldn't quite figure it out. But it was getting late, and I decided that
I wanted to go home. I could come back another day, and it
would make an interesting story. And here, gentle reader, it is.
I got home a little before the rush hour began, with another full tank.
When I checked the map again, I realised that I must have ridden
through Ducks Cross at least twice - but it certainly
wasn't signposted. I wondered what happened to it. I was to find out a
month later.
