Raven's Quest

Bottom

Introduction

First things first. You can follow the quest at one of two locations:

I don't think I'll be repeating the information here, but I figured at least a little description was apt!

What It Is

I plan to visit every state-registered historical landmark in California, and leave a BookCrossing book at each one, or nearby at some more appropriate location. Of course, I'll go there on my motorcycle, and will take a year or so, I'm sure.

Why?

Back in early 2003 I plotted and planned to do a month-long solo motorcycle tour of the southwest. I had lost my mojo, and wanted a huge challenge and an adventure.

It didn't happen. Two days before departure, my motorcycle's first gear broke. So did I, for a while. But I'm terminally optimistic, and so I got over it.

I had been doing a Motorcycle Treasure Hunt that involved visiting 50 historical markers to train and to have fun. I got really into this, and when I started looking around, I realised there was a wealth of markers and landmarks and a ton of things to learn. Bliss!

So, I converted the trip log into a motorcycle fanzine (Raven's Roads) and plotted many routes on my maps, and slowly the idea of visiting all the sites brewed, until I felt it was most certainly the right thing to do. I would need a site for it, of course, and that was how Markeroni exploded into existence. I'm still a little astonished at how much I've put up there in such a relatively short space of time, and how much sheer fun it is. :-)

And now you know.

I feel that the project lends itself to spontaneity, to short trips as well as long. There is a lot I can achieve this winter, between rain showers, while improving my skills. But if you think about this, the project allows me to induldge a pile of my passions:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Book-Crossing
  • Motorcycling
  • Travelling
  • Learning
  • History
  • Treasure-Hunting
  • Taking Photographs
  • Building Web Sites

Lucky, lucky me. :-)
