14 March 2004: Another Thousand Miles
Since the last Raven's Roads went up, about two months ago (blush), I've
been riding. And ridingandridingandriding. ;-)
On the 13th of March I arrived in Santa Cruz after my first ride to the
coast ever (on front) - and had clocked 1000.1 miles. On the 14th of
March, my 34th birthday, I exceeded last year's mileage.
It hasn't all been plain sailing. For example, on the abovementioned
trip to the coast, the fog was unexpectedly heavy and I left my warm
jacket at home. I did have an accident, but it was not a bad one, and it
was caused while escaping from a tailgater who seemed hellbent on
crashing into my rear. So, the lesser of two evils.
We're enjoying unusually warm, summer-like weather here, a complete
contrast to my last birthday when I was wandering around in the rain
feeling sulky. And, while my first trip along highway one was not
pretty, I come into my next year with a feeling of satisfaction and
happiness. Some of the choices I made - such as buying Bohn armour and
starting to go to the gym - have really paid dividends. My little mishap
served as a gentle reminder to enjoy the riding and to prepare, prepare,
prepare - to respect the bike so that it can respect you.
May all your reminders be so cheap, in terms of money and lack of
injury, and may the sun shine on your rides this year.
